A medium-sized turtle, it can grow up to 1 metre in length and weigh almost 100 kg; its body is covered by a shell made up of browny-orange coloured scales. The big front flippers help it to cover long distances during migration.
The species is carnivorous and feeds on squid, calamar, fish, and sometimes even shellfish, crabs and sea urchins. The loggerhead is a strictly protected species in France and the turtles in the Seaquarium Institut Marin are very specific cases that benefit from special derogations.
